What is Cranial-Sacral Therapy?

With its origins from Classical Osteopathy, Cranial-Sacral therapy (CST) shares the knowledge that our bodies have a life long, rhythmic involuntary mechanism (IM) which is to but independent of the movement of ribs in breathing.

This rhythmic movement originates from within the head and is fundamental in aiding the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (the liquid that lies within the protective covering of the brain and cord). The base bone of the skull and the rear bone of the pelvis (sacrum) are directly connected to each other by the outer most covering of the brain and spinal cord (dura mater). This is how the name 'Cranio-Sacral' therapy was adopted.

CST is not just for the head and pelvis!!!

During the rhythmic IM, which occurs around fourteen times per minute, a trained practitioner not only feels for minute, specific movement between the bones in the skull and the tissues below, but also can feel for the synchronised changes that occur through the whole body, including arms, legs and abdomen.

By identifying changes from 'normal' rate, rhythm and amplitude of the IM, the practitioner uses extremely gently contact in order to encourage optimal balance and health throughout the body.

Treatments are often relaxing to the point of falling asleep.
